I’m a graduating Journalism – Mass Media student at Durham College. I’ve enjoyed writing from a young age and it’s something that has followed me through my life. Growing up, my grandfather was a firefighter and he would have me sit with him every night to watch the news. That’s when I started to learn that writing could take you places and you could help people by doing it.

Once I got to college, I found a passion for telling people’s stories.

When COVID-19 began, I was in my final stretch of my journalism diploma. It was a time in my life where I felt like I had a plan and had achieved some of my biggest goals. In the span of 12 hours that changed. I went from sitting in a newsroom with my friends, to reading an email about the school transitioning to online classes. We knew it was coming, but when it did, it didn’t feel real.

I ended up not being able to do my dream internship at Global News in Toronto, which crushed me. For someone who likes to have a plan, that certainly was not a part of it. The impact this had on my life was something I didn’t expect. It changed my view on a lot of things, such as the struggles of online learning, but most importantly it showed me just how fast life can change.

During my time in social distancing, there’s only so much I can do. I’ve started to re-watch Grey’s Anatomy for the seventh time, watched all of Tiger King in one night, and I’ve been able to catch up on podcasts. I’ve spent a lot of time baking and cooking, something I haven’t been able to do while in school. I’ve also had the chance to have movie nights and game nights online with my friends.

This pandemic has changed a lot about the world and the way people are able to live their daily lives. That is why we’ve decided to create this podcast.
